A Lesser Known City in Cuba: Camagüey ( traducido al español)

The majority of international travelers may not know about the lesser traveled destinations in Cuba. There is a special village right in the very heart of this island that is worth discovering.
Camagüey, formerly called “Santa Maria Del Puerto del Principe” is one of the first seven villages founded by the Spaniards in Cuba and also one of those places you should not miss when traveling to this Caribbean Island.
Founded in 1514 in the northern coast of the territory, the town became an urban center for the sugar and cattle industry.
Known for its beautiful colonial architecture, you can find endless labyrinthian alleys, numerous squares, and ornate cathedrals, as the city is known for its Catholic history.
Exploring a city like Camagüey is quite a challenge. When it seems you have reached the end of a street, it merges with the beginning of another, totally unexpected - right before your eyes you have suddenly reached a new maze. However, rather than to discourage visitors, this helps to enliven their experience. One’s imagination easily traces a colorful village full of street vendors and upright people that greet you, kindly tilting their hats. Camaguey has always had a reputation for its hospitality.
My favorite part of traveling is wandering the alleyways and streets of a city, exploring new cafes, tasting new food, and watching children play football in the streets. Camagüey’s streets are a perfect place to peruse the city and take in new sites.
The historical center of this beautiful town was appointed UNESCO world's heritage site in 2008. Mostly reminiscent of Andalusia, Camagüey hosts a harmonious combination of different architectural styles, especially reflected in the squares and churches, that will allow you the opportunity to take some unique photos. Along with the more than 10 cathedrals, the clay pots (tinajones) and the many colonial squares, this village is also known for its legends, traditions and festivals. If visiting in June you'll probably enjoy the most popular one: San Juan Camagüeyano, an unsurpassable Cuban Carnival.
Culture in Camagüey city is highly valued. There is an art school, a music conservatory, four dance companies (including the second most important ballet company after Alicia Alonso's), and you can find more than 30 art galleries peppered across the city's downtown. Artisans are also important in Camagüey, especially those who know the magic of pottery. This city is also the birthplace of great writers, musicians and painters that have contributed important pages in the vast history of the Cuban arts.
The people of Camagüey are another important element when talking about how great this city is. Well educated, kind, honest, friendly, always willing to help. You can call them “Principeños,” “Camagüeyanos,” or “Agramontinos.”
Typical food is also unique and delicious. Dishes like Mata Jibaro, Ajiaco, and Casabe (Cassava), will allow you to experience new flavors.
The northern coast of the province, around Santa Lucia, is a perfect spot for scuba diving due to the existence in this area of the second biggest coral reef barrier in the world. There you’ll find many sunken ships dating from the time of pirates.
If you really want to experiment a matchless experience in Cuba, Camagüey is the perfect place. Among pirates, priests, cathedrals, big bellied clay pots, legendary festivals, and sunken ships you’ll find the way to go back in time and to write your own story in this “shire of hats and shepherds”

Camagüey, originalmente llamada “Santa Maria Del Puerto del Principe” es una de las primeras siete villas fundadas por los españoles en Cuba y también uno de esos lugares que no te debes perder cuando viajes a esta isla del Caribe.
Fundada en 1514 en la costa norte del territorio, se convirtió en un centro urbano para las industrias ganadera y azucarera.
Conocida por su hermosa arquitectura colonial, usted puede encontrar callejones laberínticos sin fin, numerosas plazas y esbelta catedrales, pues la ciudad es conocida por su historia católica.
Explorar una ciudad como Camagüey significa un gran reto. Cuando parece que se ha alcanzado el final de una calle, emerge súbitamente el principio de la otra, totalmente inesperada - justo delante de sus ojos un nuevo laberinto se abre paso. Sin embargo, en lugar de desanimar a los visitantes, esto los ayuda a hacer más excitante su experiencia. Mayormente influenciado por Andalucía, Camagüey alberga una armoniosa combinación de diferentes estilos arquitectónicos, especialmente reflejados en las plazas e iglesias, que le darán la oportunidad de tomar fotos únicas. Junto a las más de diez catedrales, los tinajones y las iglesias, está villa es también conocida por sus leyendas, tradiciones y festivales. Si la visita en Junio, probablemente disfrutará del carnaval más popular: San Juan Camagüeyano, una fiesta sin igual.

Si realmente desea experimentar una experiencia sin igual en Cuba, Camagüey es el lugar perfecto.
